Music
We are a high-quality choir of children and adults and enjoy singing church music both old and new. We currently have around 7 juniors and 15 adult choristers, but we actively encourage anyone interested from our local schools, together with new adult singers who may, or may not, already be members of the church congregation. We have a great deal of fun and have developed a reputation as one of the best church choirs in the area. You don't have to be religious to join! We just want enthusiastic youngsters (or adults) who enjoy singing and want to get involved in something enjoyable and worthwhile. Please get in touch if you're interested. The organist, Philip Aspden, is always delighted to meet potential singers at 11am on Sunday mornings, or at choir practice on Thursday evenings (7.15pm-8.30pm). We look after our choristers well, who receive an excellent musical training at no financial cost to themselves. Our incentive scheme awards brightly coloured medals on completion of each new skill level, for which choristers are thoroughly trained and prepared. So please find out more and get involved. Remember, most of our new singers come from non-church backgrounds and have thoroughly enjoyed the musical and social experience we offer. Children may join from age 6/7 upwards.
St Mary's Choir is supported by a friendly team of adult singers. Currently we have 6 basses, 3 tenors, 2 altos, and 4 sopranos, complementing the juniors. The adults are from various backgrounds; some are trained musicians, others are enthusiastic amateurs; some live in Henley, others travel from farther afield. Yet all are highly valued and, together, make a super sound. We currently have space for one or two new altos and tenors! If you enjoy singing and fancy the challenge of reading a harmony part then please make yourself known. Some ability to read music is helpful, but not essential; confident note-readers are, of course, a bonus. Don't be shy, though; get involved now! Whatever your musical experience, you'll enjoy the experience very much and get to sing a wide variety of church music styles. The Adults rehearse on Thursdays from 8pm-9.30pm.
